Summary of Changes – Directive 1400.03

Colleagues,

Please note the revised: VHA Directive 1400.03, Educational Relationships, published by OAA.

The summary of changes are attached. Major change #2 states: “OAA now recommends (but does not require) that a DEO be a physician for sites with more than 20 physician residents.” However, the directive’s language is a little more elaborative: “The DEO must have a doctoral degree in a health profession. If there are more than 20 GME positions at the VA medical facility, OAA recommends that the DEO position be filled by a physician. Non-physician doctoral-prepared candidates (e.g., dentist, optometrist, podiatrist) may be submitted to the Chief Officer, OAA for approval if sufficient GME expertise and experience is documented. The DEO position requires experience with graduate and undergraduate training programs.”

Thanks!

Scott
