VA Health Professions Education Week Toolkit

VA Health Professions Education (HPE) Week is March 11-15, 2024! Help us recognize all who participate in health professions education to include medical residents and trainees, VA staff and clinical educators, academic partners, and Veterans across the nation. Without you, we could not train new health care professionals to meet the rapidly evolving health care needs of today and the future. The VA HPE Week Toolkit is full of ideas to help publicize the week. DEOs are encouraged to work with their Public Affairs Officer and VA facility leadership to plan HPE Week events. If you or your medical center will be participating in events during HPE Week, let us know! Send an email to Cheryl.Whitney@va.gov with details of your event (and any photos) so OAA can capture coverage and continue to spread the good news of this annual recognition week.

VA Addiction Treatment Advanced Fellowship Request for Proposals (RFP) Set for Release September 1, 2024

The OAA Advanced Fellowships & Professional Development section will be inviting proposals for VA facilities to host the Addiction Treatment Advanced Fellowship. The anticipated release date for the RFP is September 1, 2024. The mission of this program is to facilitate high-quality, evidence-based substance use disorder (SUD) care for our Veterans by developing professionals with expertise in both clinical addiction care and the conduct of partnered addiction research and evaluation. The interprofessional fellowship accepts trainees from multiple disciplines, including physicians, psychologists, pharmacists, chaplains, social workers, and nurses. Selected facilities will be able to recruit two fellows per year. Designated Education Officers and leaders from relevant professions may wish to confer prior to the RFP release about whether their site should apply. Current sites will be required to re-apply to maintain funding. For additional information, contact the Addiction Treatment Advanced Fellowship Coordinating Center team: Program Administrator: Andrea.Confer@va.gov; Co-Directors: Karin.Daniels@va.gov; Adam.Gordon@va.gov.

Trainee Qualifications and Credentials Verification Letter (TQCVL) and Guide Updates – February 2024

The OAA Medical Informatics Unit (MIU) is releasing version six of the TQCVL Letter Template and TQCVL Guide (February 2024) with updates approved by the Office of General Counsel (OGC).

A summary of the updates are as follows:

TQCVL Letter: There are minor updates clarifying reasonable accommodation language and medical accommodation language, ensuring every HPT has met qualifications and required certifications of the training program; reminds individuals that selective service is required even with military service; and removes the H-1B visa from the non-US citizen list (any H-1B visa holder should be reviewed by local OGC departments).

TQCVL Guide: Discusses updates to the TQCVL letter; emphasizes the need for an annual TQCVL for HPTs in a multi-year program; reviews the need for a TQCVL addendum to add/subtract an HPT; explains the appointment of non-US citizens; clarifies the role of the VA program director, HPT and medical center director in the medical accommodation process; discusses the medical center director role in approving HPTs for accommodations and their ability to work in the VA while awaiting review of an accommodation; clarifies the role of the “Am I Eligible” document; and discusses TQCVL delegation of authority and acceptable electronic signatures.

The TQCVL List has no updates this academic year.

Please share widely with stakeholders involved in the onboarding of HPTs, and direct questions or comments about this document release to the OAA Help Desk under the MIU drop down.
